Behind the scenes of a Brisbane Newborn Photography Session

Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes during a newborn photoshoot? Generally a newborn session goes a little something like this.

• The guest family arrive at our Fortitude Valley Newborn Photography studio.
• Mum and Dad come into the studio with baby’s diaper bag, their brand new baby and clothing for their session.
• Everybody gets acquainted and our Newborn Photographer gives a brief welcome and shows our guests around the studio and the amenities.

• Pre-styled newborn props and colour sets are ready to go for baby if they are calm and relaxed right away.
• If not, baby will have a feed and get ready for their Newborn Photoshoot.
• Baby will either begin to be posed, or wrapped for the first set.

• In our studio we use Professional strobe lighting gear from Protog and Kayell. Our camera gear includes top of the line professional Canon 1DX and L-Series lenses (which can be identified by the red ring on the lens as pictured above.

What the newborn portrait session looks like

• There will be lots of cuddles, patting and posing, primping and propping and shooting of course – all in order to create a gorgeous gallery of newborn and family portraits for our guests.

• For the family portrait part of the session, Kristal will pose you and guide you in order to help you look your best. It will be conversational, easy and generally very quick. (Unless of course we are working with an energetic toddler which can delay things a little or a lot sometimes!)

The final edit, aren’t they beautiful!

• At the end of your session baby is dressed, we schedule your image selection appointment and see you again in a week or 2!

It is such a beautiful time of year to have portraits taken. We would love to capture some stunning photos with you in our beautiful city of Brisbane!

Our Sweet Sunset Portrait Session is suitable for:

• Maternity Photography – Pregnancy photoshoot
• Children’s Portrait Session – some beautiful, updated photos of your children at this age (suggested up to 2 children* dependent on ages due to session time. Call to discuss)
• Family photography *- Get a few family photos and some updated photos of the kids
• Couples Shoot – A lovely romantic session of just the 2 of you, – Aww!
• Individual Portrait Session – why not? You deserve nice photographs of yourself!
• Pet photography – some adorable photos out and about with your furry best friend. (Insert love heart eyes emoji)

Our studio is located in the heart of Brisbane City in Fortitude Valley. The James Street shopping precinct is just a stroll from us in one direction, and Brisbane’s iconic Storey Bridge in the other!

• 45 Minute portrait session*, Individual, Couple, Pet, Family (average 2 adults 2 children (*for larger families we suggest you contact us to discuss extending your session as extra time is required depending on age/s. Please note that these Sunset photography sessions are subject to availability. They are designed as a quick session time, capturing a lovely set of photos at that most beautiful time of day.

We can suggest some great locations, or happy to discuss any ideas you might have. Please note that if you need us to travel more than 30 minutes from the city, there would be additional travel fee.

If you have a larger family, (more than 2 adults and 2 children) that is ok, we just need to discuss when booking your session so that we can allow for extra session time if needed. An additional fee will apply depending on numbers, just give us a call.

There is the option to purchase additional images if you wish following your session. We encourage you to purchase from our wall art offerings in order to guarantee top quality artwork for your enjoyment at home.

Photography Skills Development

As a professional newborn photographer, I am constantly learning and improving my skills. It is so important to keep developing and improving your skills.

I was teaching a mentoree recently about ‘the strange thing sitting on my monitor’ while we were at the studio. The ‘strange thing’ I am talking about is a monitor calibrator. My student specifically wanted some help with her image editing and studio setup. During our session I explained what the calibrator does. We discussed how it works, and I demonstrated it in operation and explained how it is a necessary tool as a professional photographer. This was all part of her tailored one on one photography mentoring session. .

Why calibrate your monitors for photography?

I could sit here and explain why a professional photographer (If you are one, or just interested) should calibrate for better printed images, but these guys do a pretty good job at it: Why Calibrate

Personally, I use the X-rite i1 Display Pro to calibrate my screens for superior image printing quality. You can see it here:

While we were chatting, I explained how I use wide Gamut monitors, which basically means they displays more colours accurately. You can read more about Gamut here: Wide Gamut

During our teaching session, I mentioned how you can do colour hue testing. This gives you an idea of your colour recognition acuity.

In the past I have done a few of these (You can find them online) and scored 100% accuracy. This basically demonstrates that I have the ability to see and differentiate Adobe 98 colours from each other, even with the slightest of difference.

Luckily enough, I also have 2020 vision. I think this vision acuity helps me with image editing in Photoshop and also with focussing the camera to capture images!

Not everyone can see and differentiate colours in the same way, we are all different. Some people cannot notice colour hue subtlety, and some can very easily spot the slightest of difference.

I do believe however, that having the ability to differentiate colour hue is a helpful tool and is an added strength for image post production when editing my client images to look their best.
